I am looking for sources of investment planning assumptions. Mainly to
validate mine. I have an Excel spreadsheet, used and enhanced over the past
five years.
These are my key current assumptions:
· Inflation /CPI
o currently using 4.4% (average CPI increase since 1960)
o Apply to total costs of living minus mortgage calculation
o Cost of living assumes current costs - calculated with Microsoft
Money using checks written and credit card itemized detail and adjusts for
one time events
o Future cost of living increased/decreased for significant events
· Earnings potential on a mixed portfolio of stock and bonds
o Current target is 70% stocks/30% bonds
o currently using 8% annual average return
· Social security estimates
o Based on latest Social security statement estimates + 50% of the
amount for my wife.
o Assume benefits increase 3% per year
· Federal income tax rates
o Currently use the federal tax calculation
o Assume 5% increase in the base at each level of tax computation
o Use itemized deductions
