Compo with interest? by Yellow
Seeing what is happening with the Icelandic bank made me wonder about the compensation scheme. Do you just get the amount actually in your account at the time the bank folds back or do you also get the interest earnt up to that point but not yet paid also?

Icesave assets frozen - well they would be, wouldn't they?! by Roger Mills
Whilst having the greatest sympathy for those affected - my son included - I had to smile at the thought of Icesave freezing its assets. Does that mean that savers will have to wait for them to be liquidated? Pity John Thaw isn't still around!g -- Cheers, Roger ______ Email address maintained...

Kaupthing Edge - stick or twist? by Confused of Bristol
Hi. My understanding is that for UK savers Kaupthing Edge count as a UK bank with full FSCS protection for deposits up to £50,000. Does this also mean that if it became necessary, the UK government would be likely to help them out to stay solvent/trading in ways that obviously aren't going to...

Question about capital gains tax and stock commissions by hg
Just had a quick look through the online tax return thing and I noticed the exceptions section. Sounds as if they are saying that stock buy and sell commissions can be filed as an expense - that can't be right can it? Gonna ask the IR anyway to be sure, although knowing them they'll probably tell...

Capital Gains Tax & Double Glazing by Mike O'Sullivan
I'm completing my CGT return in connection with the sale last year of my late Mother's property. I had always assumed that the cost of double glazing for this property, (which was done in the years 2000 to 2002), being a capital expenditure, would be allowable in reducing the tax payable. However,...

Any way to buy a proportion of a property? by steveharman AT fastmail DOT fm
Hi! Cutting a long story very short; we'd like to buy 80% (£200k) of a property, with the current owner retaining 20% (£50k) share. We have £70k cash to put down but will any mortgage provider entertain the idea of lending us £130k in this situation where current vendor retains an interest in the...

Switching to Bank of Scotland: time for a rethink? by Adam
Hi Everyone I'm currently in the (extremely sloooow) process of switching my small business bank account from NatWest to Bank of Scotland. I originally had 3 motivations for doing this: 1. NatWest's customer service is pants 2. Bank of Scotland pay a very much more generous rate of interest on...

Good Time to Buy a Car? by Jane T
I was going to buy a car soon, I could make do with current 6 year old vehicle indefinitely, it has broke down a couple of times recently and I would like to change it and also get a good deal with the way car prices have declined. I would normally buy a 6-12 month old supermini car and run it...
