Mortgage Change and Tax by
John
Hi,
Our current mortgage deal is about to expire (Alliance & Leicester) and we
wish to move to Nationwide. We have already secured a deal (5.19% fixed for
2 years) by submitting a cheque covering the setup fees.

Online share-trading in Indian stocks by
the_muse
Does anyone know the rules governing share-trading in Indian stocks by
UK residents via the web?
And can anyone recommend an online share-trading company giving access
to the Indian stock market, whether directly or by proxy?
Any other relevant information welcome.

Containg the Property Boom by
Malcolm Shykles
Raising interest rates may not be the answer to containing house
prices.
One of the major reasons; is that the present boom in house prices
started with Brown's £6 billion-a-year raid on pension funds in 1997.
The destruction of this pillar of long term savings has resulted in
heavy property...

Credit Reference Agencies by

Hello groupies,
Something I've never understood, (well, one of them):
How are companies ALLOWED to give my personal and private details to a
third party, i.e. credit reference agencies, without my consent or
knowledge? And how are these agencies allowed to pass this confidential
information on to...

Purchasing with Credit - what will CC company do? by
T.
Hi,
I've read the consumer advice on Trading Standard's web site about the
rights consumers have when purchasing using a credit card. Equal
liability etc.
However, I have few questions please...
If I have since paid off the credit card statement, am I still within
my rights to write to them...

Wages by
Wibb
I've recently started a new job and are just wondering about wages and tax.
My old job I was paid 20k a year and came home with £1299 a month after
taxes. My new job pays 24k a year and will be paid £1389 a month.
For some reason I thought I was going to end up with more than just a £90 a
month...

Cashing US Cheques at a UK bank? by
Netman ®
I'm with HSBC, anyone know what the charges would be? I also have an account
with NatWest, if they turn out to have lower charges.
It's a $50 cheque from a relative, I'm wondering if it's actually worth
cashing it, depending on the charges?!
TIA
Steve

Seen on the DLR (its a fancy tram for non londoners)last night:
Barratt Homes advert for something new in Woolwich. A picture of a youngish,

copy, then repeat until a sort of black mess results". The text reads

Mis-sold endowment mortgage compensation by

I am in the process of applying for compensation for an endowment
mortgage which was mis-sold to me in 1988. The insurance co have sent
me a form with various questions, it looks like a fishing excercise to
me, I am deeply suspicious.
As I understand it, they first need to establish if I was...

Is Switch / Solo being phased out? by
empeejay
In an effort to manage my finances better, I've just opened a second bank
account with the Halifax. For some reason I've received a Visa electron card
instead of the expected solo debit card.
I've rung the bank enquiring why they've issued me with a card that is
accepted at very few retailers in...

Renting the 'in' thing to do... read it in one of those free papers... by
m.cantaloupe
This Sunday I picked up a copy of one of those free papers in the
London Underground. I forgot the exact name but it focuses on finance
and savings advice for the rest of us, that kind of thing.
Well anyway what caught my attention was an article about how renting
is actually quite a smart thing...

How much is £20000 in 1840 worth today? by
Anna
In Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre inherits £20000. Assuming this takes
place around 1840, how much is that worth today? Just curious as she
promptly gives away 75% of it.
Thanks,
Anna.

Stopping paying into endowment by

I'm hoping for a little mortgage advice...
Currently, we've got an interest only mortgage with the Halifax and an
endowment with Standard Life.
I have taken steps to switch the mortgage to Portman's 5 year fixed
rate repayment mortgage. However, I'm not too sure what to do with my
endowment....
