passing on $ 12,000 by
tex shalter
Purely hypothetical. . . .
Is there a way to pass on my $ 12,000 IRS yearly gift limit to my children
and not worry that their "first spouse" will end up with half of it if
things don't work out.
Thanks

Balancing Retirement and Non-Retirement Savings by
Bill Woessner
My wife and I have about $95K in retirement accounts (we're 29 and
30). That includes a mix of 401k, Roth and traditional IRA. But our
after-tax savings are pretty small in comparison. Between checking
and savings, we have $23K, $13K of which is about to go toward closing
costs on the new house...

The *company* economics of a 401k match by
joeNOSPAM@bea.com
Hi all. We know that we should do all we can
to get as much as we can of a company
matching contribution to a 401k. Can anyone
describe the benefit to, or discount to the
company for it's contribution? I am quite sure
a company bottom-line isn't lowered dollar-for-dollar.
I know of billion-dollar...

Suggestions for mid term savings/investments? by
jdbst56@gmail.com
I know the majority of the discussion in this group is about short
term (emergency savings) or long term (retirement) investing. Are
there any recommendations for investing on a mid term horizon, maybe 3
to 5 years? My wife and I both contribute well over matching to our
401ks. We've maxed out...

Managed Payout Mutual Funds by
Lon
Though these new funds by "Vanguard" & "Fidelity" have the element of
risk as do all investments,
they could work much better for many than annuities. As a retiree for
the past 17 years and now required to take Mandatory Distribution of
my IRA, I will be transferring into one of these...

In service rollover of after-tax 401(k) funds by
Default User
In my 401(k), I have a fair chunk of after-tax contributions. That
money is eligible for rollover to an IRA. In such a rollover, a share
of earnings comes with it. From talking to the plan reps, it looks like
it's about half each, that is rolling over $10k of after-tax
contributions would bring...

Interest tax deductions by
Ron Peterson
There are several categories on interest in the tax code which brings
up the question of what types of debt are best.
Debt to finance a personal vehicle doesn't seem to allow a tax
deduction for the interest.
Mortgage debt on a principal home, on the other hand, does allow a tax
deduction for the...

multi-asset managers by
beliavsky@aol.com
Many financial planners first decide on an asset allocation, for
example 60% stocks 40% bonds and then find mutual funds or ETFs either
passive or active, to implement the allocation. If an active manager
is chosen, his job is to outperform his benchmark but *not* to shift
to another asset class,...

Tax. deferred accounts vs. long term capital gains? by
oprah.chopra@gmail.com
I am reading that tax deffered account like 401K aren't so great
because you end up paying ordinary income tax rates on the
withdrawls. Is it better then to invest your money directly in stocks
and just pay the long term capital gains tax rate, 15%?
I have already maxed out my 401k and IRA's . Now...

Selling Stock by

Hi...I feel really dumb asking this but I know absolutely nothing about
stock except that I have had some certificates setting in my deposit box
for the past 17 years. They are worth about $67.000 now. Any ballpark
figure about the cost for selling them?
I don't know how to go about selling them....

if you contribute too much to a ROTH... by
joeNOSPAM@bea.com
Hi all. If one contributes to one's ROTH to the max, early in the
year,
and then manages to earn more than expected, into or beyond the
contribution phase-out range, is the solution to simply withdraw
the contribution amount? What if the contribution was invested, and
gained before being liquidated...
